I go to Kos on a regular basis and I find the Caravan one of the best value Resaurants in Kos. Hassan, the owner is very friendly and will buy you a drink to say thanks. I have eaten may meals there but try the A'La Tony. (Named after me) it is a dish of chicken pieces done in a spicy sauce of peppers and onions - a little on the hot side. I can also reccomend the slouvaki dishes, they are all very good. Now for a tip, if there are two of you only order one Greek salad between you as they are very big. He also serves breakfast from 9.00.a.
The Caravan Restaurant is situated at 52 Amerikis Street towards the Lambi area. It is very convienient for the Elite, Lydia, Lynaki Apartments as well as the Captains Hotel.
You will enjoy it if you are NOT in a hurry!! The food IS freshly prepared.
I have stayed at the Captains Hotel many times, it can be found at 44 Amerikis street on the Lambi side of town. It is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from the harbour. The owners Stefanos & Irene are very nice people and try to ensure that everything is A1. The maids Maria and Prucia are fantastic and have been there for many years. It is only a bed & continental breakfast establishment but it does have a 24 hour bar which is looked after by Mike in the evenings. The hotel can be a little noisy from the motorbikes eyc., but a few drinks will soon sort that out. I understand that Stefanos is putting air-conditioning in this winter but I can't say for certain until I get there in May.
If you are looking for a good Restaurant you won't go far wrong by going to the Caravan Restaurant a few minutes from the hotel.
Days out - Book everthing yourself and you will save a lot of money. Car Hire, try M.L.Rent a car in Kanari Street ( Speak to Mike or Freedom, say Tony told you). Boat trips, book at the harbour and try The KATERINA for the three Island cruise, they are a great family and you will have a good day out. If you want to visit Bodrum in Turkey you are best off going on the Boat - M/V THEMISTOKLES which can be found about half way round the harbour opposite the Flamingo Bar.
There are lots of things to do. Visit the village of Zia, or the hot springs at Therma or take a trip on the local noddy train. Bye for now maybe I will see you - just ask for Tony the Hat!
They are situated about 15 minutes drive out of Kos town through Pslidi. If you want to go to the springs go in the evening, you can see lovely sunsets and there are less tourists. the spring is very hot so when it's cooling down it feels really good. If you are thinking of driving down you will need a 4 wheel drive, ( you can get one from M.L.Rent a Car but don't tell him that I said that you can take the Jeep to the very bottom ), but you can park a normal car at the top and walk down, that is what most people do. Take a camera and photograph the sunsets and the goats in the rocks above you. ( Don't foget to look up)
Comments by Tony the Hat! see you in the Caravan Restaurant at 52. Amerikis Street, Kos Town. ( Best value for money in Kos )
Treat yourself to a day on the sea, BOAT TRIPS, book at the harbour and try The KATERINA for the three Island cruise, they are a great family and you will have a good day out. If you want to visit Bodrum in Turkey you are best off going on the Boat - M/V THEMISTOKLES which can be found about half way round the harbour opposite the Flamingo Bar.
Tony the Hat!
M.L.Rent a Car is located in Kanari Street about 5 minutes from the harbour on the RIGHT hand side. ( Not far from THE BOOMERANG RESTAURANT)
Mike and Freedom are the joint owners and I have allways found their cars to be excellant, and the price is half of what you would pay by going through thr tour reps. Tell Mike that Tony the Hat sent you - you may get a discount.
I went with Airtours and stayed at the Captains Hotel, 44. Amerikis Street, Kos Town. This hotel is only featured in Airtours Greece. I enjoyed my holiday there and spent most of my nights at The Caravan Restaurant. ( Very good ) and on the boat trips from the harbour, try a 3 Island trip on the Katerina - you can find it moored in the harbour after 6.00.pm. opposite the Flamingo Bar.
The BOOMERANG Restaurant is situated in Mandilara Steet off Kanari Street about 5 minutes from the Harbour.Mike, the owner is an Aussie Greek and they serve big meals. Their bread is served hot with a herb and a spicy butter. I liked the Australian Chicken, it was very tasty.
Tell him that Tony the Hat sent you.
I have been going to Kos for 2 or 3 times a year for about 8 years and I always find something new. I prefer Kos Town as I love the harbour and the boats. It is very easy to organise trips and you can catch the local bus to various parts of the Island.
There a lots of restaurants in Kos Town which include Typical Greek, International, Indian, Chinese, mexican and many more. But if you have read my other reports you will know that my favourite is The Caravan in Amerikis Street. Make sure that you take a trip on the little 'Noddy' trains. The Green one goes around the town and the blue one goes up to the Asklepieion.
There are many Bars, Nightclubs etc. to suit ALL tasts. Have a great holiday.
Tony Ainsworth
I like to visit Kos in May, normally the last 2 weeks. It is not too hot or too crowded and the prices are very competitive. When your drive around the Island the spring flowers are in bloom and there is more greenery. Most places are open by the middle of May although you will still a few shutters up.
If you have been reading items on this site you will have seen that I like the last two weeks in May. I also like the the middle of September, again it is not too hot or too crowded and it is one of the cheapest times to go. The landscape is browner than in the spring but it is still a nice time to visit.
I have also been in June & July but it gets too hot for me and is very crowded - prices are very high during June, July & August.
LIMINONAS NEAR TO KEFELOS.
Liminonas has two fairly secluded beaches, one being in the shape of a horse shoe, and the waves roll in and knock you down. If you like to be away from the crowds you should visit Liminonas
The Restaurant Liminonas serves fresh fish sold by the kilo and is served grilled with lemon. ( Fairly expensive but very good )
The name of the Restaurant is AGIOS THEOLOGOS RESTAURANT, and it can be found at Sunset Wave Beach about 15 minutes from Kefelos. It is south of kefelos past the winmills and you will see a sign for the restaurant, just keep going and asking and you WILL find it.
The best time to visit is in the evening as you get fantastic sunsets, but it may be worth while finding it in the daytime when you can see where you are going. The location is beautiful today as it has always been, a wonderful place for breakfast or lunch, but as I have said, its real charm is in the evening when you sit and enjoy a romantic meal, no loud music, just the sound of the waves and the stunning light show provided by the breathtaking sunset out at seain full view of the restaurant.
I think that it is managed by Bobby, the son of the owners Tony & Maria. Gus used to be in the kitchen and they serve a wide variety of food. Local and International - Well worth a vist.
THE SUNBURNT ARMS
This restaurant is owned an run by Giannis and Sam, she is from Coventry,England. It is situated down on the beach in SOCRATOUS STREET and serves a full Greek and English Menu. They are very well known for their SUNDAY LUNCH'S, as I said Sam comes from Coventry and makes a very good Yorkshire Pudding. If you buy drinks there he lets you use the sun beds for FREE. It has a very good reputation and Giannis is a great guy.
If you go, tell him Tony from Coventry sent you.
I like KOS TOWN because it is a good base with plenty going on. Although it is the Capital it is not too large and it has a very nice harbour and you can take the boats to Turkey or one of the many Islands including Rhodes. The shopping is good and the prices are very reasonable. The restaurants and bars around the harbour tend to charge a bit more than the ones in the side streets, so if it is value for money make your way to THE CARAVAN RESTAURANT and ask for HASSAN.
SAILING BOAT KATERINA
KOS TOWN HARBOUR (Half way round opposite the Flamingo Bar)
This is a good trip, for approx. €20.00. euros you can visit 3 other Islands and it INCLUDES lunch in a very nice greek taverna in Kalymnos. The restarant is run and owned by Yiannis who is a laugh a minute. The trip departs at 10.00.am and returns at 6.00.pm. What value approx. £13.00. The owner and captain is George, and his wife is Katerina. They have 2 children, Sylvia and Kostas, so it is a family day out. You can just relax all day and enjoy it. Make sure that you take your camera, a towel and your swimwear, maybe a sweater as well.
TURKEY FOR THE DAY. M/V THERMISTOKLES.
KOS TOWN HARBOUR (Half way round opposite the Flamingo Bar)
If you are thinking of going to Turkey for the day, take my tip and arrange it yourself. Walk to the Harbour in Kos Town and book direct with the boat, this year the tour operators are charging ?49.00. Euros, and you can do it for €20/25 if you book direct with the boat, and it is exactly what you get as if you went through your tour operator, plus you get a FREE bus tour of Bodrum and Gumbet thrown in.
BAR STREET AND HARBOUR AREA.
The harbour is very pretty at night with all the lights on the boats etc. A tip, but be careful when you visit the bars you pay a lot more for your drinks and you sometimes get 330ml bottles instead of 500ml ones which are sold in most other restarants and bars.
OTHER THINGS TO DO IN KOS.
Take a trip on the little 'Noddy' Train, the GREEN one goes around the town, and the BLUE one goes up to the ASKLIPIEIO. Make sure that you sit facing the way you go as the guide says on your LEFT you have ??????, but if you are sitting with your back to the train it is confusing - you have been warned.
EMPROS THERMA.
Get yourself a Jeep and explore, try the EMPROS THERMAS, you are actually in the sea and the temprature is about 70 degrees, it is just like having a hot bath. It is volcanic and they say it is very good for ALL skin complaints and joints. You can also take the local bus from the harbour.
ZIA.
A village in the mountains, best to visit in the evening to see the sunset which also looks out over Turkey.
OTHER.
Just enjoy yourself, go off the beaten track, you never know what you might find. Don't worry you can't get lost, there is only one main road which goes from one end of the Island to the other. That is all for now, bye and have a good holiday.
The IMPERIAL HOTEL is situated on Amerikis Street.
The Hotel is situated on The Lambi side of town in Amerikis Street, about a 10 minute walk from the harbour and about 8 minutes from Kos Town beach. The Imperial is a very friendly hotel and it has a very nice pool area. The rooms are clean and all have refrigerators. The reception is a pleasant area to sit and read, and it also houses the breakfast area. The hotel is always spotless. It is a family run hotel, I can't remember the parents names but their daughter who has just got married, is called Irene. A good restaurant just accross the road is THE CARAVAN ( See my other reports ).
It used to be featured in the Thomson Holidays Brochure but as far as I know it is not featured in any of the British brochures now. The only way to book it is independantly. Their telephone number is:-
00 30 2242 023800 and theit email address is:- imperial@hol.gr
Enjoy yourselves in KOS TOWN, regards Tony Ainsworth.
THE PALOS APARTOTEL is situated on the Lambi side of Kos Town. on the corner of Amerikis Strret and Mandilars Street. The main entrance is opposite The Boomerang Restaurant. It is less than 10 minutes from the harbour, and about 5 mins from Kos Town Beach.
I used to stay there when it was an hotel but it was converted to an Apartotel and was used solely by the Scandanavians. It used to be an Hotel with approx 64 rooms and it has been converted to an APARTOTEL with 32 very large apartments. The apartments are very spacious and have full air conditioning, private balcony's, modern furniture, good kitchen facilities, satelite Television, poolside bar, pool etc. ( I am not sure of their prices, you will have to telephone to find out )
I know the owners Dimitri & Maria, and they have many good staff but I would like to name NIKITAS & POPPY, they became my very good friends and the will do anthing to help you, they are fantastic.
Anyway this year they have decided to sell their rooms on a private basis and I do not know their email address or their web site ( If I find it out I will put a short report on at a later date ) but their telephone number is.. 0030 2242 023151, and their fax number is.. 0030 2242 028541
Once again although NOT on the beach these apartments are well situated in KOS TOWN.
THE IMPERIAL HOTEL - KOS TOWN.
This is an addition to my earlier comments.
I have now been told by THE IMPERIAL HOTEL that they will be featured in THOMAS COOK HOLIDAYS next year.

As I promised the email address for the PAVLOS APARTHOTEL is:-

Contact them as the apartments are very good.
M/V THEMISTOKLIS - K.
This boat is situated in KOS TOWN HARBOUR about halfway round opposite the Flamingo Bar. It is good value if you are thinking of visiting BODRUM in Turkey. It leaves about 08.30 / 09.00. Hrs ad arrives in Bodrum at about 10.00./10.30.Hrs. The trip accross ia about 45.mins. but you have to go through customs. You will need to take your Passport. It returns to Kos from Bodrum at about 16.00.hrs and arrives in Kos at about 16.45.hrs.
If you book youself at the boat, you will save yourself quite a few Euros as the Tour Operaters can charge an extra 40% or more. The boat is owned by a father and son and the father is very tall.He did tell me last year that he was thinking of buying another boat, but he always docks in the same place, and as I have said he is a big guy so you will easily find him.
Happy Holidays - Tony the Hat.
TURKISH BATH ( In Turkish I think that it is HAMAM.
When you visit BODRUM and if you don't like spending your money on rubbish then why not pay a visit to A TRADITIONAL TURKISH BATH. The one which I know and is reputed to be the best is situated in THE KARIA PRINCESS HOTEL and the address is:- Canlidere Sok. No.15, Bodrum 48400 their telephone number is:- (Code) 3168971. It is inbetween Bodrum and Gumbet and is only about a 10 minute taxi ride from Bodrum Harbour. You can also take the local bus from in front of the Post Office in Bodrum and they used to run at 10.minutes past the hour, but you should check yourself as they may have changed.
It's a place where you can clean yourself physically and mentally. The scrub down peels off top layers of the skin which retain the dirt. The soap massage is pure melting pleasure. After all this you will surely come away feeling refreshed and on top of the world. Don't miss it, it is better than shopping for rubbish.
Hi My Name is TONY AINSWORTH and I work for myself as a STOCKTAKER, doing STOCKTAKING for various Licensed Premises in England, and to relax I visit KOS 3 or 4 times a year. I stay in Kos Town, but to be very honest the beaches are OK, but Paradise Beach is excellent and I like to go to that one.
It is sandy, shallow, you can walk out 2 or 3 hundred yards and still touch the bottom. It is sheltered and is an ideal place to take the children for a day as there are facilities like toilets etc. There are plenty of water sports and you do pay for the sunbeds, I can't remember the price but it is reasonable.
The climb down is a fair jaunt, but you can take a car down to the beach. When I go I always keep going to the RIGHT side of the beach as I think that the sand is better.
Check out some photo's at my home page, the address is:-

THE CARAVAN RESTAURANT
52. AMERIKIS STREET, KOS TOWN.
Once again I have been to Kos for 2 weeks and I met many of my friends in THE CARAVAN RESTAURANT. I would beg you NOT to go in the last 2 weeks of MAY next year as it is now so busy I cannot get in myself to enjoy his wonderful food.
The best food and prices in Kos.
Hassan is the Greatest!!
I have just returned from my holiday in Kos, I stayed at the CAPTAINS HOTEL and I have a few comments to add.
The Hotel has had Double Glazing installed, as well as Air Conditioning.
With regard to the previous writer the CAPTAINS HOTEL is on AMERIKIS STREET which runds parallel to KANARI STREET, and is about a 5 minute walk from the Harbour and a couplr of minutes from THE CARAVAN RESTAURANT.

KANARI STREET - KOS TOWN

Once again I have visited Kos and I hired a Suzuki Jimmy Jeep from M.L.Rent a Car. One of the owners Mike was very helpful and the quality of the jeep was first class. You can hire one for 24.hours or longer and the rates are the best in Kos. If he is not there the other owner is his wife Freedom, and she will help you out.

THE BOOMERANG RESTAURANT - KOS TOWN.
Hi, I have just returned from my holiday in Kos. I stayed in KOS TOWN and I visited The Boomerang Restaurant. It is situated just off Kanari Street, near M.L.RENT A CAR and THE PAVLOS APARTOTEL.
You must try the bread, it is served hot with both herb and garlic butter. I had the ribs which were very good, use your fingers and you will enjoy them. Mike and the staff always look after you and the portions are very big.
After your meal you can always visit SHENANIGAN's for a nightcap or two. Give THE BOOMERANG a try, I am sure that you will enjoy it.
TONY AINSWORTH - MAY 2003
THE SUNBURNT ARMS - KOS TOWN
Having recently returned from Kos, I thought that I would take a look at peoples comments and add acouple of my own. Once again I visited my friends YIANNIS or ( YANNI ) & SAM at The Sunburnt Arms. All I can say is that the FOOD is good, the LOCATION is good, and the hosts are VERY GOOD, it is well worth a visit if you are staying in the LAMBI side of KOS TOWN.
This is a note for Richard & Ruth Fisher, I think that you meant to that JOHN PILLINGER called GIANNIS, YANNI - anyway I think that they mean the same, it is like John & Jack.
TONY ( ANTHONY ) AINSWORTH - HOLIDAY MAY 2003
THE BOAT ON THE BEACH TAVERNA - TIGAKI / KOS ROAD
This Taverna is situated on the beach between Tigaki & Kos. I don't really think that it has a name, but most people who know it call it The Boat by the Beach or The Old Boatyard.
As you go along the coast road from Tigaki to Kos, you pass The Byron Apartments and then The Resaurant Apellia, and shortly after that you will see a BIG WHITE BOAT on the land by the sea,it is on the LEFT hand side of the road. Shortly after that you turn left opposite an Army post, and follow the track to the beach and then turn left go for about 100 / 150 meters and you can't miss it.
It is run by a Koni and her Greek family, she cooks everything and you can some unusual Greek dishes, which makes a change for Kos. It is nothing to look at just a building with a concrete area in front for the tables, but the whole family are great. There is the Grandmother, her daughter Koni, and her daughter and Koni's husband.
It is a VERY RELAXING place which used to be a Boat Repair Yard, and two of the old boats are still there. Make an afternoon of it and go for a swim, and in the early evening have a meal and watch the fantastic sunsets over Turkey.
Don't get it too busy as it is one of my favourite places where I relax.
TONY AINSWORTH - JUNE 2003
I hired a Suzuki Jimmy from M.L.RENT A CAR in Kanari Street, Kos Town. It was great fun as we went off road up in the mountains above Kos Town. The views were spectacular and we had a great day out. I took my friend Alan Goodship from Stevenage and his father-in-law and they had a day to remember, the views over to Turkey were fantastic.
The SUZUKI JIMMY was great, but do NOT take any more that 4 people as the rear seats are fairly small.
TONY AINSWORTH - JUNE 2003
THE BOAT ON THE BEACH - TIGAKI
My friends Chris & Mick asked me to put this on as it is one of their favourite places to relax away from it all.

THE ELITE APARTMENTS - LAMBI ROAD - KOS TOWN.
These apartments are well located about a 10 minute walk from Kos Town Harbour, and they are featured in the UNIJET brochure.
There are about 10 apartments and they have a nice pool area and a pool bar.You should try a few of their Cocktails whilst relaxing around the pool. They are owned and run by Poppy and Makis who are very helpful and very good hosts.
They have their own Website where you can find all the information on the apartments, the web site address is:-

THE CAPTAINS HOTEL - KOS TOWN.
Once again I have just spent a week at The Captains Hotel, thank goodness they have had the AIR CONDITIONING installed as it was very hot at night, some nights at MIDNIGHT it was 30.C.
As usual ALL the management and staff were very helpful and kind, nothing is ever too much trouble for them.
One word of warning, it is sometimes sold by the Travel Agents with a Sea View, this hotel does NOT have sea views, but it is well located being about 5/8 mins from the harbour, the same from the beach, and there are many shops, bars and restaurants in the immediate area.
Tony Ainsworth - July 2003.
THE CARAVAN RESTAURANT - KOS TOWN
52 Amerikis Street, on the Lambi side of town.
Just returned from Kos again and as usual the Caravan Restaurant was very busy every night and the food was excellant.
It IS the best value for money in Kos Town and it is worth the wait.
Tony Ainsworth - July 2003
Note - July is TOO hot for me, 36 / 37.C
Re; Jennifer Stares, in answer to your questions.
Yes Kos is still busy in September, it is a nice month to visit. The air conditioning costs about 4 Euro's a day, but it is worth it if it gets hot. The saftey deposit boxes are in reception which, to coin a phrase is SAFE.
Kardamena is about just over half an hour by car, I am not sure how long on the local bus. anyway KOS TOWN is better.
If you are staying at the Captains Hotel don't forget to go to The CARAVAN Restaurant and take a trip on The KATERINA sailing boat. If you need a hire car to go to Kardamena try M.L.RENT A CAR.
See you in Kos.

AIRTOURS
I have been to Kos 4 times this year with Airtours, staying at The Captains Hotel in Kos Town.
The Flight was very good from Birmingham, it leaves a little late at 17.10.Hrs, but I think that it departs 2 hours earlier next year which will be great on the return journey.
I did not use the transfers but there is not a space to say so so I put in good, the CAPTAINS hotel was excellant for it's rating, very clean and it has a 24.hour reception and bar.
HAYLEY was the Rep and she is a very pleasant and efficient young lady and spends time helping guests to get the most from their holiday. I have already booked 2 holidays with AIRTOURS for next year, very good value.

Hi Charlie, the Sunburnt Arms is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from The Lenaki Apartments. Just turn RIGHT when you come out of The Lenaki and walk STRAIGHT until you reach The CAPTAINS Hotel, turn left then right and it is down by the beach.
It may only be open during the day when you are there as it is the LAST WEEK of the season, but when you are there you can give them a bell.

To Hilary Walsh, re the last entry.
Hi Hilary,
I agree with you, you should have given The Caravan a try. Value for money it is very good, but it is also very busy and if you don't mind waiting, the food is also very good, as is the host.
Like yourself I have tried many restaurants in Kos including The Allatola Hamman in Giagora Square, The Palace, and many more which are very good but I mainly eat at The Caravan these days as Hassan is my fried and I know many people who use the restaurant.
In June you will meet Hassan, but I will not be there as I am going for the last 2 weeks in May, have a great holiday.

THE CAPTAINS HOTEL - KOS TOWN.
If you book with Airtours the Air Conditioning is an extra payable direct to the Hotel. Last year it cost €4 Euros a day, you mainly need it in July and August.
You can book a room privately by going to The Captains Website, but you also have to book your flight as well and sometimes it costs you more.

HOTEL CONI - 43. THEMISTOKLEUS STREET, KOS TOWN.
Telephone number is: 0030 2242 03913, and their web site is:
www.hotelorion-kos.com/index3.html
Just type the above into your browser, it IS the correct address, although it says Hotel Orion.
The Hotel Coni is a small, cosy and hospitable Hotel in the central part of Kos town.
It's location aproximately 3 minutes from the beach and aproximately 10 minutes from the center of Kos town and about 5 mins from the CARAVAN RESTAURANT. That makes it a perfect place to spend your holiday.
The owners of the hotel, Marie & Andreas are from Sweden and Norway and they will make their best efforts to give you a unforgetable vacation, very laid back.
It is only a small basic hotel with very good prices, a single is approx. 15 Euros per night, and a double is 25 Euros per night. This does NOT include breakfast.
Have a good one, Tony Ainsworth.

Therma, with regard to the last comment it did not fully open until after the 27th of May after the winter. The access road is now quite good.
I took a few people down to see it and without exception they all enjoyed their visit and could not believe how hot the water was, try lying with your feet stuck up the tunnel where it comes up from underground, it is HOT.
The number 5 bus leaves every hour from the harbour in KOS TOWN, and it is about a 5 minute walk down a steep hill. Not for the less mobile, if you are less mobile you will need a jeep but drive very slowly as you pass the snack bars at the top or they will shout at you for making a lot of dust.

A good boat is THE MARIA STAR from KOS TOWN HARBOUR, which can be found opposite the Taxi Rank.
(NOTE they used to operate THE THEMISTOKLIS BOAT, but this one is twice as large and very fast)
I went to Bodrum on THE MARIA STAR and you DO NOT need a visa, just take your PASSPORT, that is all you need. The crossing to BODRUM takes about 40 minutes on THE MARIA STAR, this boat is air conditioned and when you arrive in Bodrum you get a FREE one hour guided tour of the sites of Bodrum by Mini Bus, and it is included in the price.
The day trip to turkey is worth every penny if you are into shopping. If you want to sve money don't go with the travel reps, go to the main harbour and book directly on the boat as it is much cheaper, this year they are charging €25.00. Euros but it may go up or down. Some of the Reps say things to put you off making your own arrangements, take NO notice of them and do it yourself.
Turkey has got a little bit more expensive since the Euro was introduced. Bodrum deals in Turkish lira, Euro and the pound. The Turkish people seem to love the Pound Sterling and the exchange rates were very good. You can pay in £ Sterliing, Euro, or Turkish Lira but the Pound seemed the best.Make sure that you 'Haggle' and when they do not chase you anymore you have reached the best price, haggling is both fun and expected.
The MARKET is up behind the BUS STATION, about a 5/10 minute walk from the harbour. TUESDAY is clothes market day, and FRIDAY is the fruit market day, but you can buy all the clothes any day and if you have not been before you would think that any day is market day.
Have a good trip, Tony Ainsworth May 2004. Email tonyainsworth@aol.com

Once again this May I visted Kos and stayed at The captains Hotel in Kos Town. Most nights I had my evening meal at the CARAVAN Restaurant where I met up with friends old and new. I would like to hello to Bjorn & Eva from Norway, Jan & Cathy from Sweden, Jos and his wife from Belgium, Margaret & Grumpy, Garry & Barbara from England and a special thanks to Eamon and Maureen from Ireland.( I hope you enjoyed Rhodes)
All the meals I had were very good and I can reccomend the Pork Steak, it was very very good. As usual Hassan worked very hard to keep his customers happy and he 'YIAMASSED' with everyone, a top host.

THE KATERINA SAILING BOAT - KOS TOWN HARBOUR
I visited Kos once again in May and I went on THE KATERINA three times, it was an excellent day out and very good value for money.
The first stop is Pserimos where there is a very nice beach, then it is off to Kalymnos where you have lunch in a local Taverna and a visit to the sponge factory. Then you reboard the Katerina and she drops anchor at a small island called Platti where you can go swimming off the boat.
George and his family really do make the day very special.
I can't wait for September to come when I shall be going to Kos once again.

OLY PYLI.
There is not a lot in Pyli apart from the spring water fountain, and small village square, but drive a short way up into the hills to OLD PYLI, you can leave your car/bike at the bottom and then take a 30 minute or so uphill walk to the most amazing old ruins.
At the present time they are carrying our renovations and the top half is closed off. At the top the is an old Crusader Castle. You should really be fit and healthy, I am niether and I was Knackered by the time I reached the first level, but the superb views make the climb wothwhile.

AIRTOUURS
I stayed at The Captains Hotel in Kos Town and it was very good.
In general I have always found Airtours and MyTravel very good, and their delays do not seem any longer than the other Tour Operators.
On the plus side I would advise everyone to attend the welcome meeting which is usually held by one of the representatives as they inform you about the Health and Safety aspects of your holiday with a few useful do's and don'ts.
They also tell you about the various day and night excursions which they organise in the resort.
However, I would suggest that you take the information away and don't jump in with both feet and book all of the excursions. It is better to check the prices locally first as you save a lot of money by cutting out the middleman.

I had an enquiry from the previous person asking if I new of a good place to celebrate a birthday, so I told them about The Palace Restaurant.
If you celebrate your birthday or wedding anniversary during your holidays in THE PALACE restaurant, they offer you a bottle of champagne and a special cake, maybe flowers, fireworks and lots and lots of FUN.
(They would like to have a look at your passport / copy of your wedding certificate)as proof of the event.
The food is also very good and reasonable, they have all the normal Greek dishes as well as an international type menu.
If you are about in the daytime on the lambi/lampi side of Kos Town why not pay a vist to their other restaurant which is THE PALACE BEACH.

After about 6.00.pm in the evening and before 9.30.am the KATERINA is situated about halfway along the Harbour in KOS TOWN opposite the FLAMINGO BAR. It does the 3 Island Tour in the daytime from about 10.00.am until 6.00.pm. I can't tell you the exact price as it varies year to year but it is about €20/25. Euros or £15/17 for adults, children are less and it icludes the trip plus lunch and a few small snacks on board.
The KATERINA is a family run boat, There is GEORGE ( The Captain ) his wife KATERINA,(Hence the name of the Boat) their two children SYLVIA & KOSTAS, and a crew member. They are very friendly and nice people and will do their best to ensure that you enjoy yourselves. Over the years they have become very good friends of mine.
It leaves The Harbour in KOS TOWN at about 10.00.am and the first stop is a small Island named PSERIMOS where it stays for about 1 hour, it has a very sandy beach and is ideal for children. The next stop is KALYMNOS, known as the sponge Island. After arrival in Kalymnos they take you to the sponge factory where they give you a brief talk about sponges and then you have time to purchase some if you want to, there is NO pressure to do so but the sponges are very good. ( This tour lasts about 15.minutes ) then it is off to a local taverna for lunch, you get a small greek salad, a main course (Choice of 5 dishes)The lunch is included in the ticket price, but you pay for any drinks which you have.
After luch you get about 45 mins to look around the Port of PORTHIA and then back to the boat and the next stop is PLATTI where the KATERINA drops anchor and you can go snorkeling or swimming. Back on the boat for a refreshing piece of melon. Then it is up with the sails and back to KOS town. If you are very lucky you may even see the Dolphins, about a 10/15% chance.
There is plenty of room to sunbathe on the sunbeds on the boat, and they have a bar which sells drinks at very reasonable prices. It is a GOOD trip and many people go more than once, so do go EARLY in your holiday.
diane taylor (September 27, 2004) - RE: Your comments.
Hi Diane,
Sorry that I have not replied earlier but I have only just returned from Kos. The Caravan will still be open although not that busy but it is a good restaurant. Maybe a little too far to go at this time of the year, it is great if you are in Kos Town, but most of the food in kos is good.
Tigaki is about 12 Km from Kos town and as I eat mainly in Kos Town I do not know the names od The Restaurants in Tigaki but I have eaten in a good one just off the main square on the front to the left if you are facing the sea. The mossies are not that bad in October but it is best to take a roll on and put it on your legs, ankles and arms before you go out at night, one of the best is named Jungle Formula and you can get it from Tesco's or somewhere.
If you want any more information please email me on:-

I went to Rhodes with my friends on the BLUE STAR FERRY from KOS TOWN.
The best day to go is SUNDAY as the ferry departs Kos at 10.15.Hrs and arrives in Rhodes at 12.45.Hrs. It departs Rhodes at 18.30.Hrs and arrives back in Kos at 21.00.Hrs.
The fare was €15.80. Euro each way. There are sun decks, cafeteria's bars and shops, it is a much better way to travel than the noisy, smelly hydrafoil.
Rhodes town is worth a visit, but make sure that you wear your most comfortable shoes as there are a lot of cobblestone streets. The people trying to get you to eat in their restaurants are a bit of a pest but the town is very nice.
Just after the Airport as you drive towards Kefelos, you will find a right hand turning by a small church, the signpost has been knocked down, so ask for PLAKA.
Drive down to the bottom where you will find a picnick area and a barbacue grill, so take some charcoal etc and have some lunch. Take some food for the Peacocks, there are at least a couple of dozen which are fairly tame. It is a nice cool area to get out of the sun.
Georges Garden Snack Bar
It is situated on the left hand side of the Lambi Road going out of Kos Town, about 5 minutes from the 24 hour Medical in Kanari Street.
It is a very pleasant place to sit in the sunken garden under the various fruit trees. I think that they have Apricots which are ready in May, and Pomegranates in September. George and his wife are great hosts and they would love you to visit them.

Day Trip to Bodrum on THE MARIA STAR.
Telephone. (0030) 2242 026058
It is a very good trip if you like shopping. The Maria Star goes to Bodrum every day, and you DO NOT require a visa, just take your PASSPORT. The price changes but it was ONLY €11.00. Euros in October including ALL taxes. It left at about 09.00.Hrs and returned at 17.00.Hrs. It took about 40 minutes for the crossing and they offered us a FREE one hour tour of Bodrum. The boat is fully air-conditioned.
Instead of shopping go to the Turkish Hamam (Turkish Baths) it is very relaxing.
On Saturdays they now GO TO TURGUT REIS where they hold a large Saturday Market, if you have been to Bodrum before try this on a Saturday.

This restaurant can be found towards the top of the old cobbled street which leads up to Diagora Square, it is on the left hand side next to The Italian Garden Restaurant, (AKA as 8.1/2).
I liked this restaurant very much because it is different, they serve lots of small meze dishes which cost between 2 and 4 euros, and half a litre of red wine cost me just 4 euros.
I think that I was the only tourist in there and I went with some of my Greek friends, and as far as I could see all the other diners were Greek - enough said.

mytravel airways / airtours holidays
i must have been very lucky as i have travelled with mytravel many times to both kos and the canary islands and i have always found them to be very good.
i stayed at the captains hotel in kos town and i must say that craig the rep was also a credit to airtours. as i have been to kos many times i did not use his services to book any trips as i know the ropes but i did use him for other queries and i found him to be both pleasant and helpful.
the only one gripe i have with airtours is that they have stopped taking bookings for single holiday makers even though we pay a supplement. i have travelled with airtours for over 10 years and stayed at the captains hotel and i am very upset about their decision as are many other loyal customers which i know, if they are not careful they will be losing a few more very loyal customers. if they read this and decide to reverse their decision they can contact me on the following:

Hi Laura,
OLD PYLI
It is now coming up to the summer season so I thought that I would give you a few ideas for you holiday in Kos Town.
This is just to let you know that The Lydia Apartments have now changed their name to The Diamond Apartments. They are located about 600 meters to the sea and are set in 12,000 square metres of colourful exotic gardens. The apartments are just 30 minutes by Taxi from Kos Airport, and about 700 metres from Kos town centre and port and in close proximity to restaurants, shopping areas and bars. My distances are only estimates but they are not a lot out.
