I stayed at the Lenaki apartments in October. I was disapointed with the room. The sheets and pillowcases were dirty. I couldnt work out if they hadn't been washed at all or whether it was just ground in sweat stains. The cooking facilities were basic, just 2 rings so we ate out most nights. The kettle fused the lights etc after a couple of days of us being there. The lounge was very uncomfortable with no sofa but more like a bench to sit on. They did clean the apartment daily though and this was done quite well. However the most irritating thing was that every day i had to have an ice cold shower except once when i got up at 6am.
The location was good though as its very close to the centre of Kos Town, and I wasn't at all afraid of walking down the dark road to get there at night...its nothing compared to the likes of London!
I think its too cold to go there in October. I went during the first part of October and was freezing. It gets very windy so take a coat.
I went to Bodrum, Turkey in early October. It was a lot warmer than Kos so go just for that! There are a lot of shops and a castle/museum. I think its worth a day trip. Things are a lot cheaper there but there is a lot of tat. Our boat was delayed in Kos so we missed the connecting free bus trip which took you to a few of the sights. Shame. Catching the boat over on market day was a bit like survival of the fitest, be warned!
I stayed just 10 minutes from Kos Town and it was nice to be close to the action. There are a lot of bars for young people but they were fairly quiet in October. The shops were ok but not great. There is a fair bit of jewellery but they tend to believe the bigger the better when it comes to earings and necklaces. I found one lovely cake shop and some other nice, reasonable priced restaurants. Tried to avoid the tacky fast food type, greasy spoon places overlooking the harbour as much as possible.
The Knights of St. Johns castle was worth seeing. Some of the roman ruins were better than others but nice to wander around in good weather.
I loved this excursion. There isn't else on Nysiros worth seeing so enjoy the volcano. The bus journey up inside it isn't frightening at all and i'm scared of heights. It was extremely windy there in October so we had to becareful not to stand too close to the edge. There are no saftey barriers. It is quite slippery to get down into and takes some time so start back up early so you don't miss the bus back to the harbour.
The volcano was great and very educational. You could see the sulphur bubbling up and it was an amazing natural to see. I thoroughly recommend going.
When you get back down i wouldn't bother visiting the monastry and avoid the greasy spoon cafes on the harbour at all costs.
Definately worth a visit. Great for photos.
I loved all the roman ruins around Kos Town but especially the Esklepillion. Excuse the spelling. You felt a great sense of history about the place and its very grand and fantastic photographic oportunities.
Its really not worth the time getting there. Its not very hot in the water. Colder than a bath! Its also very smelly. There is a cafe at the top with a great saleswoman who informs you theres nowhere else to eat before you walk down to the springs. Then when you get to the bottom you see there is one, much nicer, restaurant overlooking the springs. Good for parents watching their kids in the sea i imagine. It was very crowded in the springs and because of the cold and the smell, i didn't enjoy it much.
Kos has a fair bit going on but not too much. So you can grab a bit of peace and quiet or enjoy some of the nightlife. However, its definately not as nice as Rhodes Town on the island of Rhodes. I was a bit disapointed actually as i had heard they were similar. Sadly Kos Town has been overpopulated by tourists so it can sometimes feel a bit like Blackpool. However, for a cheap last minute deal for a family then its worth it and there are some prettier aspects to it as well, you just have to search them out.
