Friendly people, good food, but try the tavernas on the side streets such as mammas cooking on averof st at the other side of the harbour from the castle, there is another one called mummys cooking, not sure of the street but it is off the dolphin fountain roundabout, just ask you will find it and don,t be put off by the basic furniture these are where the Greeks go to eat, a tip for you before you order check out the toilets, the two mentioned also have their kitchens visible so you can see just how clean they are, and the prices are far lower than the ones on the front, with good traditional Greek food and if you prefare you may be able to get English, another tip be careful just what you order as the portions are more than you would expect, try stiffado really nice, and at the end of your meal you will be given a free drink or two or three, we have been going twice a year for the last 11 yrs never been let down, Just go enjoy choose your accom carefuly, want to know more just ask on this page will be checking it out again in a couple of weeks
we went to the volcano during October the second time there and enjojed it just as much as the first time, a bit of advice though do not go through rep it will cost you around 3 times as much, we went from Kos town and booked at the office there the day before you may have to take a taxi into town depending on where you are staying but these are cheap enough, the monestery is a bit of a climb and not really worth going to it, unless of course you have a religiouse reason to do so not to much to see, there is a very nice little taverna on the sea wall below the monestery, not greasy, clean, good food not to expensive, if you have the time visit Artin at the photographers shop he has some stunning pics of Nysiros and a good selection of music about Kos and Nysiros, not the run of the mill greek music again not to expensive really nice bloke not to busy to tell you all you want to know of the island, so should you decide to holiday on Kos try to get out to Nysiros.
We have been to Kos now for the past 10 years we Find Ideal ok, at little noisey at night around the pool area, we were there Sept 2002 and are going again this year ( Sept 2004), the only reason we didn,t go to Ideal last year is that the Apt we wanted was booked up, the owner, Hipocratese and his wife Poppy are two of the most friendly people you could wish to meet, food is of the snack type and not to expensive, drink about av, a bus stop just off site about 1 min walk, buses every 1/2 hour, taxis not to expensive, the Greek people are very friendly, one little tip, find a side street taverna to eat at, and check out the loos before you order, also see how many Greek people are dining there, stay away from most of the water front tavernas, and diners, rip offs, and not to clean,
