Mastihari Resort - (Resorts on Kos)

John A

We've just got back from Mastahari and are in the process of rebooking.  Never been back to the same place before but Mastahari is something special.

Everything others have said is true.

Mastahari is a quiet resort, but I wouldn't say that it is still real Greek now, in 2006.  Probaby was a few years ago, but I would agree that it is likely the closest you'll get in a holiday area.

We stayed at the Christina Apartments with Manos and it took us over a week to visit the Illios and Irene for their BBQ night.  Wish we'd gone earlier as the hosts are great people and the cliental are really friendly and proved to be annual repeats.

Our children enjoyed the Half-time Bar Pool and the Luis but the former is bigger with a bigger surround.

If you want the night-life, Mastahari is not for you.  But if you want a quiet, friendly area, good beach, variety of eating places and easy to get to other parts of the island for a change, you'd have to go a long way to better it.

In answer to the query re Half-Time Pool - yes it is still there and still run by Yannis.

I don't know what it was like before but it is looking a bit tired.  Perhaps it's the time of year but it needs a good weeding and there were too many broken/damaged beds.

Having said that, I don't know how one would make a profit from something like that so I'm not going to be judgemental.

The friendliness of the hosts was great and the prices were fair.  Kids enjoyed it and as long as they are happy it makes the holiday so much easier.

David Taverna - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

This seems to be called Chris and Mary's, with David Taverna on a board below - new owners?     My wife and I took note of Aileen's advice and went for the peppered steak.  Good choice. The girls were a bit more English with bugger and hot dog but everything disappeared. We ended up fighting over who was going to dunk in my sauce.

As has been said, it isn't in the best location and it was often fairly empty.  It's a shame as the food is excellent and the host is very good.

I wish him all the best for the future.

El Greco - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

We didn't have a bad experience in Mastahari as far as food was concerned, in either quality or price.  I can't recall what we had at El Greco but would be able to if it was bad.

The one thing we do recall, which is why we didn't return, was the attitude of the lady who served us.  She was distainful and appeared to be bored.

There were plenty of other restaurants with really friendly waiters and El Greco didn't have anything which would make us want to go back.

Kalia Kardia - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

Good restaurant with friendly staff.

I went for the swordfish but my daughter wanted squid.  Unfortunately it didn't turn up in the neat battered rings as in the picture, but turned up whole, deep fried, apart from the eyes and innards.  We swapped dishes and it wasn't too bad, just a bit of a shock.  Be warned if you order it.

Mavros - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

We really enjoyed Mavros.  It took some time to get Greek food-wise and we decided the bread had to go.

We ordered tuna salad and lamb chops but bread arrived so we sent it back.  You'd have thought we had insulted his mother.  It was a real sulk.  From our point of view it was a good meal and we didn't walk away bloated.

Tip: Monday night is music night - guitar, bazouki and female vocalist.  Very good.  Place was full of locals so must be good.

Nostos - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

The food was very good and the waiters are very friendly.  Mousaka and stiffado excellent.

Would have had the last meal there but opted for the sunset view at the Seaside.

Seaside Taverna - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

Saganaki egg cheese and mousaka, to finish off the holiday while looking at the sunset.

Excellent location, good service, good food.

I'd go there again.

Tasty Palace - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

Tasty Place was good but - warm taramasalata?  Didn't like that!  Never had anywhere else!

Otherwise - very good.

Traditional House - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

Excellent place.  Good food but beware, lots of it.

We foolishly ordered one portion of traditional and one portion of garlic bread plus a Greek Salad.  Difficult to eat the main dish after that, but we'll learn.
Excellent hosts.
Strongly recommnded.

Mastihari - (Exchange Rates on Kos)

John A

Recommend to change money in Mastahari.

Went to a bank in Kos town and it took an hour at two counters, phone call to UK to prove they weren't fake or stolen and 15 euros fee.

Rates were the same.

David Taverna - (Restaurants in Mastihari)

John A

That was, of course, BURGER and hot dog.

Sorry, finger trouble.
